New Tourism Programmes For Labuan

New tourism-related programmes will soon be introduced with the involvement of various related agencies, particularly the Labuan Corporation (LC), in the island. Labuan Tourism Malaysia Office director Faruzrahidzah Mohd Kassim said, while meetings were held with various industry players, the programmes had yet to be finalised. “We have had meetings with various industry players, like travel agents, to discuss their roles and brief them on our efforts to improve Labuan’s tourism industry,” she told Bernama.

Faruzrahidzah is optimistic of positive improvement in the island’s tourism industry soon, with the injection of additional allocation. She was commenting on Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s statement on additional allocation to be considered for Labuan’s tourism programmes, during his visit here last month.

The minister said this, following a statement by the Labuan chapter of the Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce last month, on the need to have an ‘overhaul’ of the existing tourism icons of Labuan, as they were not sufficiently attractive to lure tourists into the island. She said other plans were underway to boost the industry, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2014.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia Sabah academician Dr Romzi Otiong said LC had a role to play by developing and expanding Labuan’s tourism industry to facilitate the local economy growth. He said domestic tourism was one of the potential markets which contributed to the growth and development of the tourism industry, adding that it held the key to unlocking the potential of the sector.
